Colegio Brasil: School-life in Concepción

I will focus on the process of finding and fitting into a Chilean public school.  Our kids are 11 and 13 and though they would love to spend the year doing nothing, this was not an option.  Home schooling was off the table because it offered no opportunity to learn spanish or to make friends.  The immersive experience required attending school.  But which one?  The first question was deciding between the public or private system.

For years now Chile has had significant unrest over the question of  equality in education.  The private system offers a well structured, disciplined learning environment for those who can afford it.  Typically this runs between $360 and $400 USD per kid, per month.  Add bus fees and uniforms on top of this.  (note that the minimum wage in Chile is around $400/month)  There are numerous private schools throughout town and offer a variety of language options (french, english, german, etc.), sport programs and other amenities.  We have heard that the friendships formed in these schools typically last a lifetime and evolve into business partnerships, etc.
